Lecture at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin
Burcu Dogramaci gave a lecture at the conference Bilderatlas Mnemosyne, which took place on 25 and 26 September 2020 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
In her lecture “Image Politics of Resistance: Exhibitions of the Exile Association ‘Free German League of Culture’ in London in the 1940s”, Burcu Dogramaci dealt with the exhibition Allies inside Germany. This travelling exhibition, which opened in London in 1942 and was shown in numerous English cities, was initiated by the emigrant association Free German League of Culture. It was intended to convey to the population that there was indeed resistance in Nazi Germany. In addition, Allies Inside Germany referred to the commitment of the emigrants. The lecture asked what image politics the exhibitions used which featured works by John Heartfield among others? At the same time, the lecture placed the exhibition in the context of shows organised by the Warburg Institute in London in the 1940s.
