Around 1900 clock towers marked the dawn of a new era in the Ottoman Empire. The era of classical modernism, however, seems to have come to a standstill. For the canon of art history has hardened as the history of the avant-garde with a fixed repertoire of mostly male artists. The lecture series presents new perspectives on modern art and critically questions the determinations made in the course of decades of canonization. “Modern Times” intends a contemporary updating and re-reading of modern art and the canon of art history
